Segal Dry Red

Kosher (Not Mevushal) / 750mL / Galilee / Israel

Category: Wine
Sub-Category: Red wine

Segal Dry Red is a kosher (not mevushal) red from Israel, made in a straightforward, generous style that puts ripe fruit ahead of complication. It is the sort of bottle meant for the table rather than the cellar, pouring a deep crimson and drinking easily from the first glass.

The nose leans on dark plum and black cherry, with a lift of dried herbs and a touch of sweet spice sitting behind the fruit. On the palate the fruit carries through in the same register, soft-edged and rounded, with a gentle savoury thread that keeps it from feeling simple.

Tannins are fine and unobtrusive, the acidity is moderate, and the texture is smooth rather than firm. The finish is medium in length and clean, closing on plum skin and a little cracked pepper.

Segal Dry Red suits roast chicken, slow-cooked lamb shoulder, beef and barley soup, grilled kebabs with charred onion, or a cheese board at the end of a long meal. It also does well with tomato-based dishes and anything out of a shared pot on a Friday night.

Drink now and over the next two to three years, served slightly below room temperature so the fruit stays fresh.
