Claus Preisinger Puszta Libre Red Blend (2024)

The Claus Preisinger Puszta Libre 2024 is a light, juicy red blend from Burgenland in Austria, built for chilling rather than contemplating. Bright, unfussy and low in tannin, it sits closer to a crunchy summer red than anything serious or structured.

Aromatically it leads with sour cherry, cranberry and pomegranate, with a lift of orange peel and crushed herbs behind the fruit. There is a faintly wild, savoury edge to it — dried thyme, a little earth — that keeps the fruit from tipping into sweetness.

The palate is light-bodied and thirst-quenching, with fine, barely-there tannins and a brisk acid line running the length of it. Texture comes from the fruit itself rather than any weight, and the finish is short, clean and tart in the best way, pulling you straight back for another glass.

Serve it with a good half hour in the fridge. Puszta Libre works with charcuterie, roast chicken, mushroom pizza, grilled sausages with mustard, or a bowl of pasta with tomato and chilli. It is also one of the few reds that handles a warm afternoon and a shared table of small plates without complaint.

Drink now through to 2027, while the fruit is at its most vivid.
