Château Mont Redon Châteauneuf-du-Pape (2015)
750mL / Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Rhône Valley / France
The Château Mont-Redon Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2015 is a Grenache-led red from the southern Rhône Valley, generous in fruit but held in shape rather than left to sprawl. Syrah and Mourvèdre sit underneath, adding darker fruit and a savoury edge to the warmth of the Grenache.
Aromas lean towards ripe raspberry and black cherry, with dried thyme, crushed pepper and a faint smokiness that builds in the glass. The palate carries plum and kirsch through the middle, then turns more savoury on the back half, with liquorice, cured meat and warm stone.
Tannins are fine and dusty rather than gripping, and there is enough acidity to keep the ripeness honest. The 2015 season in Châteauneuf-du-Pape was warm and dry, and it shows in the depth of fruit and the roundness of the tannins, though the wine finishes long and dry rather than sweet.
Roast lamb with rosemary and garlic is the obvious match, and a good one. Beyond that, try it with slow-cooked beef cheeks, duck confit, a mushroom and thyme ragù, or hard sheep's milk cheeses.
Drinking well now with an hour in a decanter, and it should hold and continue to develop its savoury, dried-herb character through to about 2030.
