Fritz Haag Juffer Riesling GL (feinherb) (2022)

750mL / Mosel / Germany

Category: Wine
Sub-Category: White Wine

The Fritz Haag Juffer Riesling GL 2022 is a feinherb Mosel Riesling with a fine thread of sweetness sitting inside plenty of acidity, so it reads as fresh rather than sweet. Made in a dry summer that gave ripe fruit with the Mosel's usual tension intact, the 2022 is light on its feet and immediately drinkable.

Aromatics run to white peach, mandarin peel and green apple, with a faint whiff of wet slate and lime blossom behind the fruit. The palate carries yellow stone fruit and grapefruit pith, with a suggestion of ginger and honeysuckle as it opens in the glass.

Weight is modest and the texture is silky, the touch of residual sugar softening the edges while the acidity keeps everything taut and drawn out. The finish is long, saline and clean, closing dry in impression despite the feinherb balance.

A feinherb Riesling of this style handles food that dry whites struggle with: Thai green curry, salt and pepper squid, banh mi, roast pork belly with apple, or a plate of cured ham and pickles. It also works well with sharper cheeses and anything carrying chilli heat.

Drink the Fritz Haag Juffer Riesling GL 2022 now through to about 2032, served lightly chilled rather than ice cold. The fruit will slowly give way to citrus oil, honey and the smoky, kerosene character good Mosel Riesling develops with age.
