Trimbach Riesling Frédéric Emile (2019)
750mL / Alsace / France
The Trimbach Riesling Cuvée Frédéric Emile 2019 is a dry, tightly wound Alsace Riesling built on citrus and stony intensity rather than fruit sweetness. Concentrated but cool in feel, it is a wine that trades early charm for length and long-term promise.
Aromatically the 2019 leads with lime peel, white peach and grapefruit pith, backed by a chalky, faintly smoky edge and a whiff of orchard blossom. The palate is dry and precise, with lemon and green apple running the length of it and a saline savouriness underneath that keeps the fruit in check.
Structure is the point here. Fermented in stainless steel and matured in neutral vessels, with no malolactic fermentation, this Riesling keeps its acid line taut and its texture clean, and the warmth of the 2019 season in Alsace shows as depth and concentration rather than weight. The finish is long, mineral and bone dry, closing on lime zest and wet stone.
Serve it with pan-fried whiting, oysters, roast chicken with lemon and thyme, or a Vietnamese prawn salad. It also handles richer fare well, from pork belly to a mild Thai green curry.
Drinking now if you decant it, though Cuvée Frédéric Emile rewards patience: expect this vintage to build texture and honeyed complexity over the next fifteen to twenty years, with critics pointing well beyond 2040.
