The Kientzler Riesling Osterberg 2022 is a dry, tightly wound Grand Cru Riesling from Alsace, built on citrus and stony austerity rather than ripe fruit. It is a wine of line and length, and it rewards patience.

Lime zest, green apple and white peach lead the aromatics, with a chalky, gunflint edge underneath and a faint waxy note that suggests where the wine is heading. The palate is dry and precise, running lemon pith and grapefruit across a mineral spine, with just enough stone-fruit weight from the warm, dry 2022 season in Alsace to keep it from feeling severe.

Acidity is firm and drawn out, the texture fine-grained and faintly saline, and the finish is long, dry and distinctly savoury. Osterberg Grand Cru gives this Riesling a flinty, more classically reserved shape than the softer Alsace style some drinkers expect, and there is real concentration sitting quietly under the surface.

Serve it with fresh oysters, poached snapper, roast chicken with lemon and thyme, or a plate of gruyère and prosciutto. It also stands up nicely to Thai green curry and lighter Vietnamese dishes where salt and chilli need cutting through.

Drinking well from 2026 and through to about 2037, with the mid-palate filling out and toasty, honeyed complexity arriving after five or six years in the cellar.
