Schoffit Riesling tradition (2024)
750mL / Harth, Alsace / France
The Domaine Schoffit Riesling Tradition 2024 is a dry, tightly drawn Alsace Riesling from the Harth lieu-dit on the plain outside Colmar. Precision is the point here — this is a lean, citrus-driven white with real length rather than a plush, showy one.
Lime peel and green apple lead the aromatics, with white peach, crushed stone and a faint waxy note that Riesling picks up in warmer Alsace sites. Air brings a touch of orchard blossom and a hint of ginger.
The palate runs narrow and long, with the gravelly, sandy-clay soils of Harth showing in a dry, mineral finish. Acidity is bright without being sharp, and there is just enough weight through the middle to stop it feeling austere. The wine closes clean and faintly saline, with a slight bitter-citrus grip that keeps you going back.
Pour it with Sydney rock oysters, sashimi or a whole snapper off the barbecue with lemon. It also handles Thai and Vietnamese food well — green papaya salad, prawn rolls, anything with lime and chilli — and a slice of Alsatian tart with bacon and onion if you want to eat where the wine comes from.
Drinking well from now, and the acid structure should carry it comfortably through to 2032, picking up honeyed and kerosene characters as it goes.
