Schoffit Pinot Gris Tradition (2024)

Category: Wine
Sub-Category: White Wine

The Schoffit Pinot Gris Tradition 2024 is a dry, textural Alsace white grown on old vines in the Harth lieu-dit on the edge of Colmar. Ripe and generous in fruit, it stays taut rather than heavy, with just a trace of residual sugar at 1.8 g/L doing little more than rounding the edges.

Aromatics are unusually expressive for the wine, a result of the 2024 spending longer on gross lees than in previous years. Poached pear, quince and yellow apple lead, with honeysuckle, wet stone and a faint smokiness sitting behind them. The palate follows through with nashi pear, dried apricot and a savoury, almost nutty undertone.

Grown organically on gravelly soils under light sandy loess, this Pinot Gris carries real weight across the middle without turning broad. There is a fine phenolic grip that gives the wine shape, acidity that keeps 14% alcohol in check, and a long finish that closes dry and mineral. Texture is the point here more than fruit sweetness.

Serve it with roast pork belly, smoked trout, a mushroom tart or a plate of charcuterie and pickles. Alsatian classics such as tarte flambée or choucroute garnie work beautifully, and it holds up to mildly spiced Asian dishes where a leaner white would disappear.

Drink from now through to 2032. The Schoffit Pinot Gris Tradition is approachable young, though a few years in bottle will bring more honeyed, toasty complexity to the mid-palate.
