Domaine Pichot Vouvray Moelleux Le Marigny (2020)
750mL / Vouvray, Loire Valley / France
The Domaine Pichot Vouvray Moelleux Le Marigny 2020 is a sweet Chenin Blanc from Vouvray in France's Loire Valley, ripe and honeyed but never heavy. Sweetness here is held in check by the bright acidity Chenin Blanc keeps even in warm seasons.
Quince, yellow peach and poached pear lead the aromatics, with beeswax, chamomile and a little candied citrus peel sitting behind them. Air brings out the faintly waxy, lanolin character that marks good Vouvray.
The palate is medium-sweet rather than lusciously so, with the fruit weight of a warm year carried on a firm line of acidity that keeps the finish clean and long. Texture is smooth and slightly viscous through the middle, then the wine tightens and dries out, leaving honey, apple skin and a saline edge.
Serve it lightly chilled with a blue cheese, a pâté or terrine with fruit paste, or roast pork with apple. It also handles spice well, so a Thai green curry or a lightly chilli-spiked duck salad works better than you might expect. Simple fruit desserts such as poached pears or a tarte tatin are the safe end of the range.
Drinking well now and worth cellaring: Le Marigny 2020 will reward ten to fifteen years, with the honeyed, nutty notes of maturity replacing the primary orchard fruit along the way.
