Veuve Laperriere Blanc de Blancs Brut (NV)

The Veuve Laperrière Blanc de Blancs Brut NV is a dry French sparkling wine made entirely from Chardonnay, produced under the Vin de France appellation by the Loire Valley house Ackerman. Expect a bright, citrus-driven fizz with fine bubbles and just enough breadth to feel generous rather than austere.

Lemon and green apple lead the aromatics, with white peach and a touch of pastry-like yeastiness sitting underneath. On the palate the Chardonnay fruit carries through clean and unforced, grapefruit pith giving way to something softer and creamier towards the middle.

Acidity does the structural work here, keeping the mousse lively and the finish dry and clipped. Texture is smooth without being heavy, and the wine closes on citrus zest and a light chalky bite that resets the palate.

Serve it well chilled as an aperitif, or alongside oysters, freshly shucked prawns, salt-and-pepper squid, goat's cheese tarts or a plate of hot chips. It also handles Sunday breakfast duties in a glass of orange juice without losing its shape.

Veuve Laperrière Blanc de Blancs Brut NV is made for drinking now, within a year or two of purchase, while the fruit is at its most vivid and the bead at its finest.
