La Chouffe is a Belgian blonde ale brewed in Belgium, instantly recognisable by the red-capped gnome on the label and considerably stronger than its easy-drinking colour suggests at 8% ABV.

The yeast does a lot of the work here, throwing off white pepper and clove alongside citrus and orchard fruit, with a dry, spicy finish typical of the style. Body is medium and the carbonation lively, with just enough bitterness to keep the sweetness in check.

Serve it cold in a tulip glass to start and let it warm slightly in the glass - the spice opens up as it does. It's a good match for creamy cheese or spiced food, and while it's happiest drunk fresh, the strength gives it a bit of leeway if it sits for a while.
