Schöfferhofer Dunkel is a dark wheat beer, brewed in the Dunkelweizen style at 5%, from a brand more often known for its fruit-flavoured wheat beers than for one this traditional.

Dark malt brings toffee and faint banana-bread character to the aroma, layered over the usual wheat-beer yeast notes of banana and clove. Bitterness barely registers, the body is soft and full, and the finish is rounder and sweeter than a pale wheat beer without being heavy, with a gentle caramel warmth sitting underneath it all.

Serve it cold in a tall glass, swirling the last of the bottle in to pick up the yeast sediment properly, and it's still best enjoyed fresh rather than held onto.
