What a day. Pinot Heaven came back for another year, and more than 150 of you came through our doors to taste 70 of our favourite pinot noirs from around the world. There were pale, perfumed Burgundies, dark and brooding Tasmanians, and bright, juicy wines from New Zealand's South Island. The room was buzzing from the first pour to the last.
Punters voted with their wallets on the day, and we're excited to reveal the top twelve, as chosen by those who attended. The top twelve covers Central Otago to the Côte de Beaune and brand-new releases to wines with a few years in bottle. Tasmania put in a very strong showing. It's clear our pinot-loving community likes both freshness and depth, and isn't shy about a bit of whole-bunch spice.
Thank you to everyone who came along, tasted, talked and pick up some wine. Here are the crowd-favourites!
1. 2025 Terra Sancta Mysterious Diggings Pinot Noir – Central Otago, NZ
From Bannockburn in Central Otago, this comes off a steep, north-facing slope planted in 1999 with six pinot clones. It's intensely aromatic, with bright red fruit, bramble and spice. It's the kind of juicy, generous pinot that wins a room straight away. Your number one, and remarkable value for the region.
2. 2025 The Wanderer Upper Yarra Pinot Noir – Yarra Valley, VIC
Andrew Marks' single-vineyard pinot from Yellingbo, grown on volcanic red soil. Fragrant red and black fruits, rose petal and allspice lead to dark cherry and a smoky, volcanic edge. It's wild-fermented with 20% whole bunches, unfined and unfiltered. Deep and persistent, with beautiful tannins, from a tiny, concentrated vintage.
3. 2024 Sinapius Close Planted Pinot Noir – Tasmania
This is one of Tasmania's great high-wire acts. The vines are planted at 7,700 per hectare and each yields barely half a kilo of fruit. Expect ripe plum and dark berries, whole-bunch spice, savoury herbs and a fine, graphite-like line of tannin. Tension and intensity in equal measure, and a thrilling glass.
4. 2023 Escarpment "NOIR" Pinot Noir – Martinborough, NZ
Escarpment's approachable Martinborough pinot, made for drinking now. It's soft and bright, fruit-driven, with red cherry, savoury notes and a gentle hint of spice on a medium-bodied palate. It proves New Zealand's pinot heartland delivers at every price, and it's a brilliant partner for salmon or roast chicken.
5. 2024 Ingram Road Pinot Noir – Yarra Valley, VIC
Made by the team at Helen's Hill, this is consistently one of Australia's best-value pinots. Black cherry, raspberry and strawberry sit on an elegant palate with earthy, herbal undertones and a little spice. The acidity is balanced and the tannins are soft. Everything you want from Yarra Valley pinot, without the heavy price tag.
6. 2023 Home Hill Estate Pinot Noir – Huon Valley, Tasmania
A family-run Huon Valley estate on a former apple orchard, still owned by the Bennett family. It's deep ruby, with sweet red cherry, blackberry and boysenberry over forest-floor notes. Plush and polished, with chalky tannins and a long, silky finish. Delicious now, with the structure to cellar for years.
7. 2024 Dexter Pinot Noir – Mornington Peninsula, VIC
Tod Dexter spent decades making wine at Stonier and Yabby Lake before focusing on his own Mornington Peninsula label. The 2024 is pretty, aromatic and supple, with wild strawberry, cherry and kirsch, hints of cardamom, a lick of oak and fine, powdery tannins. Elegant, juicy and seriously well made.
8. 2023 Domaine Dujardin "Chasne" Bourgogne Rouge – Burgundy, France
Our top Burgundy comes from siblings Margaux and Paul Dujardin in Monthélie, who were named Burgundians of the Year in 2024. The organic fruit comes from Monthélie and Auxey-Duresses, and it's wild-fermented and aged in used barrels. Light yet insistent, with cherry, raspberry and gentle spice. Village-level charm at a Bourgogne price.
9. 2019 Patina Pinot Noir – Orange, NSW
Grown at around 930 metres on volcanic soils in Orange, Patina's pinot is built for patience rather than instant gratification. With some bottle age behind it, the 2019 shows the finesse and savoury complexity the winery aims for. It's cool-climate, food-friendly and a lovely reminder of what time does to pinot.
10. 2019 Moorilla Muse Pinot Noir – Tasmania
Moorilla, the Hobart estate that's home to MONA, grows its premium Muse Pinot Noir in four blocks on the property. The 2019 offers fleshy red fruit, florals and smoked meat, then cherry, light spice and fine, smooth tannins. Eighteen months in French oak leaves it with years of cellaring ahead.
11. 2024 Helen's Hill Long Walk Pinot Noir – Yarra Valley, VIC
The step up from Helen's Hill's much-loved Ingram Road, Long Walk is a single-vineyard pinot from the estate's Coldstream slopes in the Yarra Valley. Red cherry, cranberry and fine savoury spice lead the way, with dried herbs, a little earthiness and fine, mineral-tinged tannins. Vibrant, medium-bodied and beautifully long.
12. 2024 Silent Way Pinot Noir – Macedon Ranges, VIC
Silent Way is the Macedon Ranges label of Matt Harrop, once of Curly Flat and Shadowfax, and Tamara Grischy. It's named after a 1969 Miles Davis album. Red plum and bright cherry sit alongside a hint of five-spice, with a supple, balanced palate, lovely mid-palate texture and fine, lingering length.
