The winners of Pinot Heaven 2023

Last Saturday, we poured 101 Pinot Noirs for over 200 punters. It was a fantastic day and a big thanks to everyone who came along for the fun. In a few week's time we'll be opening up the top 5 wines of the day (as decided by the punters) for anyone who missed out or wants another excuse to have some great Pinot in their glass :)

Below are the top 5 wines of the day:

Ghost Rock Supernatural - $33.6

Hailing from the north of Tassie, this little ripper of a Pinot boasts an impressively perfumed nose of crisp cherries, blueberry, savoury herbs and 5 spice. The label is a bit funky but the juice overdelivers for the money. It's hard to find Tassie Pinot this good under $50.

William Downie 'Cathedral' - $32

William Downie's multi-regional Cathedral Pinot is something the team at Bellevue Hill are guilty of often taking home at the end of a long shift. It's a little gamey, a little crunchy, super textural and there's plenty of red fruits and earthy spice. We were confident this would do well on the day and it didn't disappoint. Enjoy a bottle over a few days and see how it evolves...

Helen's Hill Range View - $60

Helen's Hill is known for their nerdy approach to Pinot, focusing on clones of Pinot brought over from Burgundy. They're hard to grow, but have an amazing wow-factor when done right. This 100% Pommard clone Pinot shows finesse and length, with a palate defined by dark cherry, bramble fruits and cloves. This is a super serious drop, and incredible value for the tasting experience it offers.

Soumah Pinot Noir - $25.6

The whole Soumah range was showing incredibly well on Saturday. But clearly the punters were as surprised by the price/quality of this cheeky pinot as we were when we first came across it. There's plenty of generous ripe red fruits, elegant acidity and tannin structure, and some quality French oak presence that coats the palate like smooth milk chocolate.

The Wanderer Upper Yarra Pinot Noir - $56

THE wine of the day!

Coming from prime, volcanic real estate in the upper yarra, this single clone Pinot's got something serious going on. There's a little matchstick, smoked meats and red fruits on the nose. On the palate, acidity and resolved tannins dance around each other, producing a finish that never seems to end. It's savoury, generous, refined, and with great tension that keeps you thinking about your next sip.
